GLAUCOMA,IT'S CAUSES,SYMPTOMS AND MANAGEMENT

ADVERT POST-TOP

ADVERT POST MIDDLE
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness caused due to pressure build-up in the eyes. The fluid produced in the eyes called aqueous is balanced by its’ drainage, but when there is excessive production of this fluid or inadequate drainage; this may cause the eye pressure to rise.

This pressure increase causes severe damage to the optic nerve of the eye, this nerve transmits images to the brain so that we can see them. Too much damage to this nerve can cause blindness (i.e, permanent vision loss). Glaucoma affects the two eyes, but it's always higher in one.

Causes of Glaucoma
• Glaucoma can be inherited.
• Health issues such as Diabetes can put one at risk of having glaucoma
• Long use of steroidal based eye drops
• Blunt trauma or chemical injury to the eye
• Severe eye infection
• Certain eye condition like hypermetropia.

Glaucoma affects adults mostly, but youths and children have the chances of having it too especially when it is hereditary. It is a gradual stealer of sight, starting from the loss of peripheral vision(side) which may not be noticed earlier till when it has caused damage to the optic nerve.

It is necessary for an individual especially over 40years of age to go for eye check-up at least every 6months, as this will help to detect any trace of Glaucoma at a very early stage and prevent further damage to vision.

Some Symptoms of Glaucoma
• Eye pain
• Blurred vision
• Headache
• Tunnel vision (central vision),etc.

Management

Glaucoma can be managed with the use of an eye drop, the doctor chooses the kind of eye drop to prescribe depending on one’s health condition because some eye drops affect the heart and lungs. In some cases, surgery may be required.
